One of the things that I have loved about attending the Candidate Weekends at NYU Abu Dhabi is hearing about all the different kinds of music that the candidates have on their iPods.
So I’m asking for help from those of you who have attended one of the weekends: I need new music to listen to, and I’ll bet that I’m not alone. Please leave a comment below in which you make a listening suggestion, something that you enjoy and that you’d like to bring to the attention of the friends that you made during your visit to Abu Dhabi.
It can be a song, an album, a piece, or a playlist. Give us the information that we need to find it and also tell us either why you like or what we should be listening for as we hear it (or both).
My iPhone thanks you in advance.

Mt Eden Dubstep- Sierra Leone
I love this song because it has an absolutely sick beat. It’s a pretty intense song, and it’s been known to give headaches sometimes, but it’s definitely a great experience, if nothing else.

Buffalo Daughter – Mirror Ball
How’s going, Cyrus? Haven’t seen you since 1972…

Personal mixes I’ve made, each mix at the bottom has a different mood to it.
One song suggestion:

Dejame Entrar – Carlos Vives
This song is one of the first compromises between Colombian traditional music and rock/pop. Not exactly one of my favorite ones, but I can’t help feeling like I’m back home when I listen to it.

A Moroccan song to globalize your playlist đ this musical style is called “tarab al andalousi”, it was created in the Andalous (now part of Spain) when it was an Arab territory about 600 years ago, now it is a very popular music in Morocco.

These are some songs I enjoy listening to, not quite sure you’ll like the last one, but it’s my favorite :p , the lyrics (which are really deep and amazing) rely on the fibinacci sequence, as well as the time signatures of the main guitar riff,
I hope u’ll enjoy đ
I have thrown together a small sample of my 5000+ songs in my iTunes library for you. I have spared you from my heavy metal for the time being.
Each of the songs have a significant story tied to it but 2 are quite interesting.
One of the songs in the playlist is “Maaki Madni,” performed by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NK4Z1QEt6p0
I grew up with this song (my father actually bought the CD when I was only a few years old) and can now sing along as well as play along on my accordion for all 17 minutes of it …
There is also a song called “Yuki.” The CD was given to me by my deaf friend. People thought it was strange that he and I often swapped CDs. He told me that he really loved the feel of this music.
Philip Glass is one of my favourite composers! I would suggest looking into him as well. (Anthem, Part 2 from Powaqqatsi).
The playlist:
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, “Maaki Madni”
The Arcade Fire, “Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)”
The Mahotella Queens, “Mbube”
Death Cab For Cutie, “Different Names For The Same Thing”
Philip Glass, “Anthem-Part 2” (from Powaqqatsi)
MGMT, “Kids”
Air, “Mer du Japon”
The Sound of Animals Fighting, “This Heat”
Moon Eyes “Yuki”
Gipsy Kings, “Hit Mix ’99”
Louis Prim, “The Jungle Book: I Wan’na Be Like You”
Monsters of Folk, “Say Please”
Bright Eyes, “At the Bottom of Everything”
hang on, do you need new music because you would like to try out from the different nationalities or because you want some suggestions in general? because although Ethiopia has a very beautiful selection of songs, i was thinking of suggesting something along the lines of Vivaldi. (or have you already considered the “classicals”)
@Sara: How about some of each? I’m more likely to know a Vivaldi piece than something from Ethiopia, but I’d love to know what Vivaldi you like best.
I’d like to make a listening suggestion: Katie Melua. She is a Georgian-British singer, songwriter and musician. Melua made her musical debut in 2003. In 2006, she was the United Kingdom’s biggest-selling female artist and Europe’s highest selling European female artist. I’m sure you’ll like her music.

This is Sssen, a progressive/electro duo, comprised of an NYU student and a Columbia student. Their music is at times extremely fun and ‘dancey’ but my favorite tracks are ones that for me capture what it feels like to be living in NYC and struggling with issues of technology, anonymity, and loneliness. Give “Polaris” and “Taken” a close listen (on the myspace page) and check out “If Your Head is Empty” (the youtube link) if you want an upbeat tune with interesting sounds. Enjoy.
Desert Rose – Sting ft. Cheb Mami
– Britisth singer ft. Arabic dj, very exotic sound, I recommended this on NYU AD’s Facebook wall, great lyrics and message to boot
Qing Hua Ci – Jay Chou
– probably the most famous modern Chinese artist, song title literally means Qing Flower Vase where Qing is the name of one of China’s many dynasties
Irgendwas Bleibt – Silbermond
– famous German group, song name literally means Something Stays, interpreted as Something that remains behind or is left over
Alles Kann Besser Werden – Xavier Naidoo
– another famous German singer, song name literally translates to all can become better
Sha Po Lung – JS
– traditonal/modern Chinese sounds, translates literally to Kill Break Wolf
Yue Ya Wan – F.I.R.
– more modern, but exotic, sound, song name means Moon Crescent Bay
An Tagen Wie Diesen – Fettes Brot
– old popular German singer, name means On Days Like Theses
All the albums these songs are in are also quite amazing! So are naturally the artists singing them!
Hope you like them!!!

I think lately this is my favourite song, partly because of the lyrics, and party because of everything else.. đ The singer, Feke PĂĄl has roles is musicals (I love them), that is how I got to know him, and I love his own, rockish songs even more.. this song is called ‘new world is waiting for me’, so I think it’s quite understandable why I listen to it a lot..:)
ManĂĄ is Mexican band that are very popular, I don’t think they’ve come up with anything recent, but here are a few songs: El Reloj CucĂş ; Muelle De San Blas ; CorazĂłn Espinado ; Ăngel De Amor ; Vivir Sin Aire ; Rayando El Sol ; Eres Mi ReligiĂłn.
Sin Bandera is made up by a Mexican and an Argentinian singer, some songs for you: KilĂłmetros ; Si Me Besas ; A Primera Vista ; Para Alcanzarte.
One of my favourite songs of all times is ‘EstĂĄ Saliendo El Sol’ by an Argentinian group, Intoxicados. I also like French music, my favourite song at the moment is ‘Comme des Enfants’ by Coeur de Pirate. Hope you enjoy these! (:
Hello, Mr. Patell! How are you?
All of the songs that I’ve chosen combine motifs from Bulgarian folksongs with modern sound. Some of these motifs (especially the bagpipe and the vocal ornaments) come from the Thracian culture which is as old as 3000 years.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Hy-uDkT5CI
This song was composed for Eurovision 2007 and it won 5th place. Elitsa and Stoyan are famous Bulgarian artists, whose other songs you may also enjoy.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYWTvxpscf8&playnext_from=TL&videos=guUaMZ7cs_M&feature=rec-LGOUT-exp_stronger_r2-2r-2-HM
This song is performed by two Bulgarian sisters living in Italy for a contest named “The Golden Coin” (maybe the most popular children song contest in Europe). It is interesting that some parts of the lyrics are in Bulgarian and some in Italian.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CD3bikniKUo&feature=related
This song is really popular in Bulgaria (actually I’ve grown up with it). Its producer Marcel Cellier won the Grammy Award 1990 for the project “Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares, Vol. II” (including this song) performed by the Bulgarian State Television Female Vocal Choir.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G3TYDiXBmqw
I wasn’t sure whether to include this song, because of its horrific lyrics. The song refers to the mass raping of Bosnia women by Serbian soldiers. This is one of my favorite songs, but because most of the lyrics is in Italian, I didn’t have an idea about the meaning until recently. The chorus is performed by Bulgarian singers.
Enjoy!

I have to say two things:
First of all, I love music, for real, it’s like a hobbie. I listen to every genre that exists, but if I would recommend a genre that kindly reflects my country or my culture I would mention the following:
this song is a salvadorean song, and is great. It’s like a funny song so don’t take it seriously… It was a song made in honor to our national dish, pupusas haha, which is a kind of tortilla with cheese or any ingredient inside. It’s delicious and I recommend it! Everybody in El Salvador knows the song.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bqjw7kYQyLo&feature=related
The next song it’s not actually Salvadorean, I think it’s Colombian. I posted it because Salvadoreans listen to that type of music in parties or among friends. Since we love to dance and have fun (specially to dance), it’s a perfect song that spreads the warmth we live daily.

I’d love to read your posts!
I’m Scandinavian, so most of my music has a sort of melancholic feeling about it. Beautiful, but it takes a few listenings to capture the full beauty. Just like it takes a bit of time to get to know your stereotypical Scandi đ
Like Juan Felipe, I’m a huge fan of Sigur Ros. It’s in Icelandic and therefore completely impossible to understand, but it is completely breathtaking. Try ‘Svefn-G-Englar’.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vosnN53GFU
My all-time favourite band is Mew. It’s a Danish Indie band, which has a bit of pop appeal due to their skills in constructing melodies. Their lyrics are in English, but very weird and highpitched, so you can’t really understand them. Try ‘156’ or ‘Am I Wry? No’.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jFjKALF454g
Norwegian band ‘Kaizers Orchestra’ is rock and roll with Norwegian lyrics. They’re very upbeat and has some really catchy songs. Try ‘Di Grind’
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pEq98CJ_3mU
Try Swedish rapper ‘Timbuktu’, a true cosmopolitan. He’s rapping in a special Swedish dialect, which means that even some Swedes have trouble understanding what he’s saying. A shame because he has lots of humor and opinions. Try ‘Alla vill till Himmelen Men Ingen Vill DĂś’ (which means ‘everybody wants to go to heaven, but nobody wants to die’)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hv759wmsSFk
Danish band ‘Efterklang’ has the special Nordic melancholy I’m talking about, but turn it into something very beautiful. They are known for using many different instruments in their songs; you’re almost sure to find violins, trumpets, and synthesizers in every song. Try ‘Mirador’
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vSKIl-NeZeE
‘Kashmir’ is probably the most well-known alternative rock band in Denmark, and has been so for the last 10 years. Not without a reason, though. They write interesting lyrics and really know what they’re doing. Try ‘Rocket Brothers’.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IWgqIzt6Lzo
‘Blue Foundation’ is a trip-hop, electronic, alternative band composed of musicians from Denmark, the UK, and Japan. The lead singer’s voice is beautiful, and makes it easy for listeners to connect to the otherwise very electronic beats. Try ‘Save This Town’ (A pledge to save the Danish free city Christiania)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2tszJ3A9d4
For other Nordic bands (no country should be forgotten, right?), try Finnish band ‘Alamaailman Vasarat’, Faroese singer ‘Teitur’, and Greenlandish singer ‘Angu’.
And don’t worry I do listen to music that is not Scandinavian đ
This is a slightly off-topic post, but I’d like to comment on how lucky we are to have an academic freedom zone in AD next year. I’m traveling in China at the moment and the so named “Great Firewall of China” is beyond incredibly frustrating! And yes, I do know there are ways to circumvent it, but I’d dubbed it impractical since I’m hopping all over the place.
What brought up this little rant was the disappointing reminder of modern day censorship when I tried clicking on the Youtube links. I want my music and freedom!!
Guess the old adage about not realizing the importance of something and missing it dearly until you have lost it…
I’ll end with an interesting quote I can across that’s at least somewhat related to the topic of this thread! “Music is the outburst of the soul.” The extrapolation is that the music in a culture will reflect the soul of that culture. Therefore perhaps also revealing the similarities and differences in our world’s many diverse cultures.
Dear Mr. Patell:
What a fun thread!
Hm… If I had to recommend some great Chilean Music, I’m torn between some popular music such as The Jaivas, or Inti-Illimani, or a great rock band such as Los Prisioneros, which is actually a critical response to our military government during the 70s-80s. Of course, taking out politics, it is still a great band with powerful messages and music!
So here goes the songs!
“Sube a nacer conmigo, hermano” from Los Jaivas (Based on Pablo Neruda’s set of poems, Alturas de Machu Pichu)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_fnaSda-zo
“Todos Juntos” from Los Jaivas
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zWKqatBLX58&feature=related
“El Mercado de Testaccio” from Inti-Illimani
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGhi0JD2aIo
“La voz de los 80” from Los Prisioneros
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWP__YnKzsI
“We are Sudamerican Rockers” from Los Prisioneros (According to rumors, the first Latin American Music Video in MTV! Of course, when MTV was still dedicated to music)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9QvJFrP5Ks
“Quieren Dinero” from Los Prisioneros
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h4a4XTPD4ms
Enjoy!
Everyone has been recommending songs from all around the world so i thought why not some Pakistani music. This song here is performed by a folk artist and a band called “noori” together. Its music and lyrics are so amazing and thought provoking that I really like it! The song is in “Punjabi” and “Urdu” and it is based on sufi poetry of “Bulleh Shah” ( famous Sufi poet)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ra5nTlty6CM
This song is in some dialect of Pushto and it is about love! Its beautiful. Give it a go!

Dr. Patell,
I told you that I would put a post on this thread a good while ago, and I’m finally going to do it! Most of my library is American music, but I’ve had a lot of good songs recommended by friends and family, and I’ve picked up a bit for myself. Here are a few bands and artists I thought you’d like:
Kate Rusby (England) – She has a beautiful voice and I like the simple acoustic guitar accompaniment. Her songs are folksy, and even though the lyrics are English the accent makes it exotic!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JX_2NLrF484
Olodum (Brazil) – My stepfather suggested I included this in my list, and I liked what I saw of their music. The group is Afro-Brazilian, evident in their use of drums with the Portuguese lyrics. There aren’t a lot of good-quality videos available on Youtube, but here’s what I found. I love these guys’ hairstyles, especially the ones on the far right and left.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bEFQc9N70A
Wise Guys (Germany) – Probably my favorite foreign band. This is an a cappella group who does a lot of light, upbeat songs.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lEm8Dtw6EGM
Hildegard von Bingen (Germany) – I actually first heard about Bingen in a Medieval Womens Studies class. She was a 12th century German saint, now known for the religious chants she composed. Obviously, the music isn’t modern, but it’s got a style that is totally unique and which I like to hear every now and again.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJEfyZSvg5c
Garmarna (Sweden) – The lyrics are totally unintelligible, but the sound of the language and the beat are phenomenal as far as I’m concerned.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vIC_SNtYpxQ
Nach (Spain) – This is a rap group, one of the few I listen to. I understand a lot of the lyrics and they’re actually meaningful, unlike a lot of American rap, and the fact that they are Spanish makes the songs flow very nicely.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmPuZNcBYfc
Conjure One (Canada) – Again, English lyrics but still technically a foreign band and definitely worth listening to. They do a lot of calm synth music with fantastic vocals. I actually found this band on the site Pandora, searching for songs similar to those by the American band Moby – also a good one to look into if you like this song.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6kj0EJWEvw
I hope you like all this! I’m excited about the links in the previous comments – my library does not have nearly enough world music content as it is.
